No matter what you read, hear or imagine - nothing can prepare you for such a relaxing and mythical experience! The wonder of the natural geothermal hot spring is not something you can believe, even when you're standing five feet away. Sure, I could see the steam rising from the milky blue waters but honestly, it was 4 degrees where I stood, snow was draped on the once active volcanoes surrounding the springs, and it was so dark and overcast the midday sun could easily have been mistaken for having already gone to bed.Slipping into the 39°C waters was like passing through a mirror into another world. The steam added to the dreamlike quality of the setting and the scenery was just breathtaking. I imagined the natives and Vikings would've spent the winter months hibernating in these very waters. Maybe. And then come out looking like prunes for the summer. The football field-sized area was big enough to feel like you were (almost) the only one there so, making use of the complimentary signature mask/scrub pots that were dotted about the spring, I donned a silica mud face and found a cosy spot to relax. The steam room and sauna are built right on the spring. From the rooms you can see through one-sided glass out to the almost fictional-looking scene. However, the steam room is insanely hot and it's hard to breathe in there so you do kind of appreciate the breeze when you go outside again – for a brief moment. The man-made waterfall feature also acts as a complimentary massage treatment. The water comes down so hard and fast you can feel it working deep into the muscles. I spent about two hours in the water and had intended on having an in-water treatment but actually had so much fun just wading around and taking everything in that I forgot about that option and was pruned up before I knew it anyway. The place is such good - about the only thing that is in Iceland - at about the equivalent of £15 for entry. The facilities are wonderful as well. There is a lot of space dedicated to the changing area which have plenty of lockers, showers and enough grooming space (with decent hair dryers!) for even the most diva of women. The lockers are activated by a wristband you wear for the duration of the lagoon visit and the showers contain signature Blue Lagoon shampoo and conditioners for post spa use (although you are required to rinse yourself before entering the spring as well). Iceland is probably not the kind of place one would frequent but if you are planning to visit Iceland, you'd be absolutely mad not to make the effort to witness this natural wonder. I seriously almost cried when leaving at the thought I'd never get to come here again!
