About Finishing Touches Hove

It is hard to give a realistic overall rating from my perspective, because whilst the facilities and therapist were fine and professional (meriting very good marks), the experience of having semi-permanent eyeliner done, was for me, pretty horrific (so not a good rating!). I can't really fault the proprietor/therapist, I understand she is very experienced in her field, but the sheer pain and awfulness of having it done, was extremely difficult. So this review is in no way a criticism of the therapist or the facilities, just how I found the experience. I just wanted others to know that this procedure isn't a walk in the park and to think long and hard and perhaps if possible watch someone else having it done first, so you know what you are letting yourself in for. There may be some who have had it done who will think me a wuss, I wouldn't class myself as one, but whilst some may tolerate it fine other people won't, and forewarned is forearmed!Think about it, it's a tattoo at the end of the day, on one of the most delicate and thin-skinned areas of your body. There will be some people probably who would handle it better than me, we are all different with different perceptions of pain. Numbing cream was used as expected, but this barely dulled what I felt. Your eyes stream uncontrollably all the way through, one eye felt even more painful than the other (if that's possible!) and it felt literally as if someone was poking a huge needle repeatedly into my eye. Your eyelids are held very firmly as they naturally try to close, flicker and recoil away from what is happening to them. You know how it feels when an eyelash goes into your eye, like there's a brick in there because the nerve endings are built to be sensitive there to react protect your eyes. I felt so faint while it was going on because I couldn't bear the pain, despite the numbing cream. I just wished it would end and felt so stupid for putting myself through it in the name of convenience. I had to ask her to stop a couple of times to have a break from it, and by the end I was almost in tears. I was told that if you tense it can make the results less than satisfactory, but when you have physiological responses (e.g. the recoiling eyelids) that you have no control over, despite trying your hardest to relax and breathe through it, it's impossible to relax your muscles. When it was over I sat up and looked in the mirror and I was as white as a sheet from the shock, and I could barely open my eyes they stung so much. The next morning my eyelids top and bottom were badly swollen as far as the socket and stuck together. I don't know how long it takes for the swelling to resolve, but put it this way, if you are having this done, plan it when you have at least 2 days that you don't need to leave the house! You are not allowed to put any eye make up on for 5 days otherwise it can get infected. Another reason to allow the best part of a week to hide away, unless you don't mind people seeing you with hard, obvious lines of eyeliner without any mascara or eyeshadow to balance it out, and puffed up to boot. You have to sign a long form, initialling every section to state that you agree that all sorts of things can affect the results or cause them to be less than satisfactory. So no rubbing, picking, botox and all sorts of other things. At the moment, the eyeliner looks too hard and too dark. I asked to see lots of photos of the different colours as I had wanted either a dark grey or dark brown as I felt jet black would look too dark with my colouring. I was told that charcoal would be best as the colour fades a bit. I truly hope it does because even with charcoal I look totally unnatural and weird at the moment.Apparently they can't continue the eyeliner up to the inner corner because of tear ducts (I didn't understand this because apparently it doesn't go deep enough to draw blood and I wear my eyeliner below the eyelash line not above it anyway), nor up to the outside edge because when we age our corners droop (i.e. you'd end up with a hanging black line!). I accepted this even though I have not a smidgeon of such drooping yet, and the eyeliner will have worn off by the time I might have. I had wanted it up to the outside edge and also 'ticked up' on the outside top lids but they don't do that for the same reason. Now I know how painful it is I'm glad I didn't have that little bit extra anyway, but it does make the eyeliner look even more unnatural and hard because there are gaps at either end, which notice if you have quite open eyes. I guess once you can wear make-up again you have to fill it in, but it kind of defeats the object of it a bit in that case. One lower eyeliner is faintly 'blobby' and less even than the other one, so I will have to match it with normal eyeliner anyway. I expect if I went back for the top-up that could be sorted out, but I can't do it! You are supposed to go back a month later for a top-up, or as I was told "it's a false economy" because the colour will probably fade and break down after 6 months instead of lasting up to 2 years or so. After what I've been through, I will accept it fading because there is no way on earth I would repeat this experience. So, if you have a high pain threshold, you don't mind things going near your eyes, you have done your research, don't mind not wearing the rest of your eye make-up and having swelling for a few days, and are really sure it's for you, you will probably be fine. There is no reason anyone fitting those criteria should not go to Finishing Touches.
