The largest employer in the area is Skipton Building Society, along with its subsidiaries. There are also many recruitment firms in the area. Skipton is a tourist location. It is the nearest and largest town of all the small towns within the area known as the Dales. It has many visitors especially on market days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday). Skipton attracts a lot of shoppers and because of this there are a wide range of shops in the town. In fact, in 2008, the Academy of Urbanism voted the High Street the best shopping spot in all of Britain.The Copper Dragon Brewery, which can be found in the town opened in 2002. They produce five different cask beers, four of which are also available in bottles. There are also two theatres, Skipton Little Theatre and The Mart Theatre. Skipton, like any other British town, has many pubs, along with two nightclubs and an array of restaurants ranging from French, Mexican, Indian and many more. The Skipton Charities Gala is an annual fundraising event held to raise money for local charities and non-profit organisations. It is held every year on the second Saturday in June. It starts off with a parade or procession through the town with live performaces, then it all ends with more live music and a firework display. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs through Skipton and is a popular tourist destination with beautiful walks and boat hiring facilities readily available. Many visitors, along with locals, enjoy watching the various local sports teams. They have two football clubs, Skipton Town A.F.C. and Skipton LMS, two cricket clubs, Skipton CC and Skipton CI and a rugby union club, Skipton R.F.C. Coulthurst Craven Sports Centre is popular with sports enthusiasts, as it has an all-weather football field and squash courts. The primary schools in the area include Greatwood Community Primary, St Stephen's Catholic Primary and Parish Church Primary. The secondary schools are Ermysted's Grammar School, all-boys, Skipton Girls' High School, all-girls, and Aireville School, co-ed.
