Ely has preserved many of its historic sites and cobbled shopping streets. A market is held every Thursday and Saturday, allowing residents to buy and sell local produce such as organic fruit and vegetables. On the bank of the river is a boathouse owned by the University of Cambridge Rowing Team. Although the annual race is held on the River Thames, the race was once held on the River Ouse in 1944. Although the main highlight of Ely is its cathedral, there are also plenty of museums which appeal to both local residents and visitors alike. As well as the popular house of Oliver Cromwell, other interesting attractions include the Ely Museum, the Babylon Gallery and the Stained Glass Museum. Another highlight of the town is its large antiques warehouse. Ely is one of the cities to have embraced the CamShare concept, a free online car sharing scheme for the general public, to help reduce the traffic and the problems with parking. Public transport is generally easy to reach.Ely has several primary and secondary schools spread across the CB6 postcode district. Lantern Community Primary is a school located about half a mile from the centre of CB6. For secondary school options, both The King's School Ely and City of Ely Community College are co-ed institutions less than a mile away.
