At the south west corner of the island there is a restaurant/bar called Lobster Smack Public House. It was once frequented by Charles Dickens, author of Great Expectations. This restaurant is well priced, with many different menu items and good beer selections.There is a modernist International style building overlooking the Thames estuary called Labworth Café. It was built in the 20th century as a seaside resort. It was recently renovated in 1996 to be both a restaurant and beach bistro. The north side of the island is home to the beautiful Castle Point Golf Club. The course has 18 holes which are fit for all skill levels. The view is exquisite, being along the Thames Estuary.There are several primary and secondary schools in SS8. One is Castle View School, which is a secondary school for children aged between and 11-16. It is a specialist science college. Around 900 students attend Castle View along with 200 staff members.
