French-Manicure in Mitcham
The shopping facilities in Mitcham are far from comprehensive; there are only a few shops and offices on Fair Green. London Road is home to a Tesco, discount stores and the Mitcham Market. The market is held on a fully pedestrianised area of Fair Green, which is also the location of the Clock Tower - an iconic landmark in Mitcham. It dates back to the late 1890s and was built in commemoration to Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. It has become notorious for its unreliability, with stories of its four faces displaying different times and its hands even moving backwards.More prominent in the area is the impressive range of kebab, fish and chip, fried chicken and Chinese takeaway shops distributed between Streatham Road, Church Road, Sherwood Park Road and Upper Green East.. Mitcham is geographically well placed to benefit from the services of the nearby retail centre in Colliers Wood, which is home to a number of household names such Next, Sainsbury's, B&Q and Boots. There is also the option of travelling by car, bus or tram to the town centres of Wimbledon and Croydon for a more extensive range of shopping and recreation services. Bordered by Croydon Road, Carshalton Road and Beddington Lane, Mitcham Common is a 460-acre conservation area where residents can enjoy peace and tranquillity as well as the sporting facilities (golf course) available on site. The Canons Leisure Centre on Madeira Road boasts an array of facilities for fitness fanatics such as a modern, well-equipped gym, a hall for indoor sports and a 25-metre pool.Located off London Road is the Mitcham Cricket Club, which is advertised as the oldest one in the world. The green on which it stands is thought to have been used since 1685 and was regularly visited by Lord Nelson. This area is now conserved by virtue of its natural splendour and historic significance. It is an 8-10 minute walk from the Mitcham tram stop and may alternatively be accessed by a number of buses that run through the area (118, 127, 200). The modern, quiet trams provide links between Mitcham and neighbouring towns. The tram stops within this location are Phipps Bridge, Belgrave Walk and Mitcham. There is another one conveniently located at Mitcham Junction railway station which in turn serves London Victoria, 18 minutes away.Transport connections were a particular problem in this area, with the local Mitcham Junction station serving London Victoria about a mile away from the centre of town. This has now been resolved with the recent opening of the Mitcham Eastfields railway station which serves the region more directly. There is good road access to the M23 (Gatwick) and the M25 (Heathrow). However, it must be noted that the centre of Mitcham is often clogged with through-traffic.
