The Comeston Lakes Country Park has been a popular attraction in Penarth since it was developed in 1970. There is a lake, along with many acres of woodland and heath, which are perfect for walks and picnics. The Cosmeston Medieval Village is open daily and offers historical re-enactments on summer weekends and bank holidays. The reconstruction of the historical village in Penarth is regarded as the best of its kind in Britain. Another attraction to visit is the Turner House Art Gallery, located on the top end of Plymouth Road . It features exhibitions of photography, video and new media art. Alexandra Gardens is the town's main Victorian park, which opened in 1902. It is covered with colourful flowerbeds, leafy glades, an ornamental fishpond, an ornate bandstand and a memorial to the fallen of both World Wars. Another beautiful location is the beach front promenade, which draws in visitors and tourists with its Italian Gardens, which exhibit many unique palm trees and other exotic plants. The Penarth Marina opened up in 1987. It can house about 350 yacht berths, along with having remarkable modern waterside homes. The primary schools in Penarth include Cogan County Primary, St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary and Nursery School, and Victoria Primary. The secondary schools are St Cyres Comprehensive School, Stanwell School, and the Westbourned School. The Stanwell School received a large investment of several million pounds which has been invested in a new building, facilities and equipment throughout the past decade.The two week long Penarth Holiday Festival takes place each July and dates back to 1966. It features special events throughout the town and celebrity appearances. The events include pop concerts, yacht regattas, donkey derbies, parades, fairs, art exhibitions and a dazzling fireworks display. There is the pier in which many of the activities for the festival take place. However the Penarth Pier hosts a range of entertainment all summer long. One can even fish off the pier for free.There are many sports clubs in the area, such as Penarth Cricket Club, Penarth Rugby Club, Penarth Amateur Boxing Club, Penarth Bowls Club, Penarth Hockey Club and Penarth Lacrosse Club. The Cogan Leisure Club is a modern sports centre than has a range of sporting facilities including a pool and many playing fields. The newer Cardiff Sports Village is less than two miles away from the centre of the town. Lastly, the Penarth Sea Cadets is for youths aged between 10 and 18. They offer a wide range of activities all year round. Some of these include sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, shooting, camping, engineering and cooking.
