About Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Plymouth
from the moment i joined a year ago, on a pay-as-you-go membership i had problems. firstly i noticed nufffields had set up two direct debits (good for them, bad for me) and had taken £110 instead of the agreed £55. fortunately i always check my statements and spoke to staff at the club who just shrugged and told me to go to the bank and cancel the other order which i did; having to take time out to visit the bank. the following day i was given a cheque for the outstanding sum and told to return to the bank with it (more wasted time?) so i asked if the amount could be put onto my card but, no, they wouldnt do that. the staff seemed very casual about the whole thing, like it happens all the time and it was a case of take it or leave it. the club boast of a freindly atmosphere but on most visits i come and go without any aknowledgement at all. the guys on the desk are usually fooling about amongst themselve or there is nobody around at all. the changing rooms vary in in their cleanliness. sometimes smelling strongly of urine, peoples discarded bits are left in the showers, even used tampons! when i told staff i got the usual shrug and hopeless look and was told people always leave tampons in the showers and there were no women on duty to clean, so i can only assume the tampons got left until the following day! still i put it all behind me to use the nice pool; nice that is until the summer months when the air and water temperture became dangerously hot for anyone wanting to have a good swim session.i raised the issue with the staff who gave me the now expected shrug and told me it always get like that during the summer because none of the windows open and there is no air conditioning. on a later date i left a comment in the comment book expressing my concern over the heat in the pool area. only to notice that someone had written beneath in large letters "THE POOL IS THE CORRECT TEMPERTURE" obviously the customer is not always right at nuffeild. so being the summer i stopped using the centre ( still paying my subs though ) and took to swimming out-doors but with the on-set of autumn i returned. one day i was not able to get to the club during my off-peak hours and i thought i could pop in later. the club was really quiet due the lack of member parking on 'orange wednesday' cinema nights i diidnt think i would have a problem, how wrong could i be, i was pounced on at the the door and told that i was out of hours but i could come in just this once. (very nice) then on leaving i was followed out of the door by the same desk staff holding up my membership and pointing out the terms and conditions.(ironic really since my presence at the club had never evoked any aknowledgement until that moment) i was really upset by it all and felt it couldnt get any worse.but i was wrong because on my next visit (during my off-peak hours!) i was told they had no towels, and yes it was followed by the hopeless nuffeild shrug so only having an hour free i was unable to have my session.i returned the following evening.(yes, the ultimate sin, outside my hours! ) and again i was jumped on by the same staff member. i tried to explain that i was unable to use the club during my off-peak hours the previous day due to the towel situation and asked why i had not been emailed about the problem, she told me and wait for it "only a select few had been texted about the towels", which raised the question who are the select few and how does one qualify? at this point i saw another staff member who seemed unable to make eye contact but i tried to reason with him anyway pointing out that the pool was completely empty ( it really was!) but he just repeated that i was out of my hours, by this time i'd had enough and so in sheer frustration cancelled my membership. no member of staff even suggested i try a different type of membership which might suit my hours more, if they had i probabley would have gone for it but they only seemed intent on blindly reminding my of my hours, how right they were and seemed only too keen to accept my resignation.it appears that the staff lack any p.r. training.and seem intent on getting by with as liitle output as poosible. no comments or suggestions i made were ever taken on board or even given any consideration. as a member i felt completely under valued and my advice is to avoid there are better clubs out there. just one other thing dont expect to use the sauna, that caught fire about a month ago and is still out of action!!!!
